Tenzing Norgay (May 15, 1914 - May 9, 1986) was one of the first climbers to climb Mount Everest.

Born in Nepal on May 15, 1914, Tenzing's real name is Namgyan Wangdi. The name means 'rich and fortunate believer' in Nepali. He first climbed Mount Everest at 8848 meters with New Zealander Edmund Hillary.

Norgay was born in 1914 into a farming family in the Khumbu region of Nepal. Tenzing was also known as Sherpa because of his Sherpa descent. On May 29, 1953, Edmund conquered Mount Everest with Hillary.
