• 1603 – King James VI of Scotland acceded to the thrones of England and Ireland, becoming James I of England and unifying the crowns of the kingdoms for the first time.


• 1775 – Birth Day of Muthuswami Dikshitar, Indian poet and composer (Death On  1835).

• 1854 – Slavery is abolished in Venezuela.

• 1869 – The last of Māori leader Titokowaru's forces surrendered to the New Zealand government, ending his uprising.

• 1874 – Birth Day of Harry Houdini, Hungarian-American magician and actor (Death On 1926).


Harry Houdini (March 24, 1874 – October 31, 1926) was a Hungarian-American illusionist and stunt performer, noted for his sensational escape acts. He first attracted notice in vaudeville in the US and then as "Harry Handcuff Houdini" on a tour of Europe, where he challenged police forces to keep him locked up. Soon he extended his repertoire to include chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, straitjackets under water, and having to escape from and hold his breath inside a sealed milk can.


• 1922 – Birth Day of T. M. Soundararajan, Indian singer and actor (Death On  2013).

• 1934 – The Tydings–McDuffie Act came into effect, which provided for self-government of the Philippines and for Filipino independence from the United States after a period of ten years.

• 1989 – The tanker Exxon Valdez (pictured) spilled more than 10 million US gallons of oil into Prince William Sound, Alaska, causing one of the most devastating man-made environmental disasters at sea.

• 2012 – Jose Prakash’s Death , Indian actor and singer (Birth On 1925)

• World Tuberculosis Day


World Tuberculosis Day, falling on March 24 each year, is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease. In 2012, 8.6 million people fell ill with TB, and 1.3 million died from the disease, mostly in the Third World.
World TB Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day and World AIDS Day.
